Letztes Jahr im Sommer habe ich die Beautiphul EP von DJ Aakmael im Plattenladen aus Neugierde mit in den Vorhörstapel gesteckt. Ich kannte das Label Church, ihn aber nicht. Was soll ich sagen: Deeper als Deep House trifft es wohl am besten, DJ Aakmael alias Greg Stewart verpackt seine unüberhörbaren Jazzeinflüsse in subtile Ami-Burner wie “Space”:
Die Platte habe ich natürlich gekauft und seitdem verfolge ich unregelmäßig seinen beachtlichen Output. Greg Stewart ist als DJ und Produzent sehr aktiv und wird tatsächlich mit jedem Release immer besser und besser! Der Mann lebt seine Leidenschaft, die mit einem Wunsch anfing: Sein Ziel war es, einmal mehr Platten als seine musikalischen Eltern zu besitzen. Das ist ihm jedenfalls laut eigener Aussage ziemlich schnell gelungen. Die neuesten drei Platten im Regal hat er kurz für uns zusammengefasst:
Mike Huckaby – Too Many Classics To Be Left With (…) – Deep Transportation (2017)
This one was a gift sent from Mike Huckaby to celebrate his new album of Detroit classics. I have a few of these tracks on digital and love playing them out, so when he did this release I just had to add to my vinyl collection! It had just the right deepness for any follower of the Detroit Deep House scene.
Les Baxter – African Jazz – Capitol Records (1959)
Although I’m known to spin lots of great House Music, I’m also a widespread music lover and avid record collector. Sometimes I stop by one of our local record shops (Steady Sounds) and dig through the many classics in the bins searching for gems. I ran across this one and listened, and was immediately drawn to the percussive and atmospheric sounds. I thought it would have been a good addition to the collection.
Ramsey Lewis – Best of – Cadet Records (1970)
I found a copy of this record in NY (Second Hand Records). I have a bunch of Ramsey Lewis records from the 60’s, so anytime I go record shopping I always keep an eye out in the jazz section. This was a compilation of some of his best works at the time, it had some music I already had on other releases and some that I wasn’t familiar with. So, I picked it up without listening to it, cause you can’t go wrong with more Ramsey in your stack.
Mit einem Kinderwunsch fing bei DJ Aakmael alles an: Er wollte mehr Platten als seine musikalischen Eltern zusammensammeln. Das ist ihm jedenfalls ziemlich schnell gelungen. Wenn er nicht Platten diggt, schraubt er an wahren Deep House-Bomben für Labels wie Bumpin’ City, Unified, Cyberjamz, Late Night Running, Church, Slow Down oder Kolour.
